I saw the eye poke but he was able land a couple accurate shots and able to avoid two punches pretty easily after. Except the last few of course. So I think it was more so Gunner not being able to accept the ko, which is why he complained about the eye poke afterward.
He's trained with Connor so you pick up certain techniques but he's fought that why since he started in the ufc with a wide stance and he's had success with it ko a few fighters so he's not trying to be anyone but himself.
